Attempting The Absurd

“Only those who attempt the absurd will achieve the impossible” – M.C Escher.

These words are the inspiration behind this blog. It is the philosophy that drives me to attempt the seemingly impossible.
I’ve decided to set off on a journey to live life instead of just being alive. I am not suffering from some life threatening disease or fulfilling the dying wish of some dearly departed; this is the blog of an average middle aged, 10 cigarettes a day smoking, overweight (read fat) guy who has made the decision to turn his life around. I am tired of living an inconsequential life, safely commentating from my couch; always too timid to come out of my comfort zone and step into the open.
Shouting, “I am here too!!! I matter!!! I have something to say!!! I have something to contribute!!!
So, I’ve decided to be seen and to be heard. Have you ever felt like that? That you simply cannot keep your mouth shut anymore? It’s like in one of those movies where the actor or actress smiles at the person they actually despise. Then they show you the alternate response where he beats the crap out of that person. That is so true with many of us, certainly for me. I am what many people consider a “sweet” person. YEAH RIGHT! If you knew what I really think of you, you wouldn’t say that you f@k#ng idiot.  Anyway, I have wasted enough energy on that. This blog is not about manning up to beat the crap out of anyone. It is about me really starting to live the life I deserve. I am doing this for me. I am what I am because of the choices I made. I honestly believe that. I have made many stupid choices that has shaped my life thus far, so if that trend is to be used as a guide, then it make sense that the decisions I make now, will also shape how the rest of my life will be.
So, with that in mind, I have decided that I was going to run a local Ultra Marathon here in South Africa, called the Comrades Marathon (http://www.comrades.com/) in June 2014. In order to make that a reality, I will need to do a few things;
1, Stop smoking
2. Start exercising
3. Lose weight (I weigh 110kg now, so I need to lose about 35 kg to reach my ideal weight of 75kg)

You are most welcome to join me on my journey as I will be logging my progress until that day in June 2014.
